Toxoplasma gondii jest pasożytem kosmopolitycznym, który wywołuje u ludzi toksoplazmozę - jedną z najczęstszych chorób pasożytniczych na świecie. Pomimo, że choroba ta u zdrowych ludzi zwykle ma charakter bezobjawowy, zarażenie pierwotne w czasie ciąży może spowodować poważne objawy w przypadku inwazji wrodzonej. Obecnie diagnostyka toksoplazmozy oparta jest głównie na badaniach serologicznych, w których wykrywa się specyficzne przeciwciała anty-T. gondii (IgG i IgM) w próbkach surowicy pacjenta.
