Stalinist architecture of Kiev. Soviet heritage in the life of the capital of independent Ukraine.

The aim of this thesis is to present transformations taking place in Kiev during the communist era and the role of Stalinist architecture in these changes. Kiev, under a communist rule, was meant to transform from a small town to a major city as well as to become administrative and political centre of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. This thesis also examines the influence of Stalinist architecture urban planning on historical districts of Kiev.Charter 1 presents the issue of Stalinist architecture while the following subsections comprise an attempt to provide a definition of the term, a description of links between art and politics in the Soviet Union as well information on chronological frames of Ukrainian Stalinist architecture.Charter 2 focuses on the history of the city including the relocation of the capital from Kharkiv to Kiev, the functioning of the city until WWII, the period of the German occupation as well war damages. The last part of the chapter presents damages inflicted by a post-war communist government.Charter 3 presents the process of turning Kiev into a capital city. The following parts of the chapter include information on the reconstruction and conversion of the city, urban planning conceptions and their influence on the city panorama, as well as architects and architecture competitions.Charter 4 includes a description of Kiev’s Stalinist architecture with its different models and their connections with the functions of the buildings. The following parts provide information on government and public buildings, sport centres and Kiev’s underground system.Celem tej pracy jest ukazanie przemian zachodzących w Kijowie w czasach komunistycznych i roli jaką w tych procesach pełniła architektura socrealistyczna. Kijów pod rządami komunistów miał z ośrodka o małym znaczeniu stać się wielkim miastem – centrum administracyjnym i politycznym Ukraińskiej Socjalistycznej Republiki Radzieckiej. Praca analizuje także wpływ socrealistycznej urbanistyki i architektury na historyczne dzielnice Kijowa.Pierwszy rozdział opisuje samo zagadnienie socrealizmu. Kolejne podrozdziały to próba definicji terminu, opis powiązań między sztuką i polityką w Związku Radzieckim oraz informacja o ramach chronologicznych ukraińskiego socrealizmu.Drugi rozdział opisuje losy miasta, a więc fakt przeniesienia stolicy republiki z Charkowa do Kijowa, funkcjonowanie miasta do czasów II wojny światowej, okres okupacji niemieckiej oraz zniszczenia z okresu wojennego. Ostatnia część rozdziału opisuje zniszczenia w strukturze miasta dokonane przez władze komunistyczne po wojnie.Trzeci rozdział opisuje proces kreowania miasta na stolicę. W kolejnych częściach zawarte są informacje o odbudowie i przebudowie miasta, koncepcjach urbanistycznych, ich wpływie na panoramę miasta oraz architektach i konkursach architektonicznych na projekty poszczególnych budynków. Czwarty rozdział zawiera opis charakterystyki kijowskiego socrealizmu oraz jego różnych modeli i ich powiązania z funkcjami obiektów. Kolejne części opisują budynki rzędowe, budynki użyteczności publicznej, kompleksy sportowe oraz system kijowskiego metra
