The Italian Delicacies by Milan Begović

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the travel writtings Put po Italiji by Croatian modernistic author Milan Begović. The edition of the whole cycle published in 1942 contains 18 „postcards”, which were written at the beginning of 20th century, in the middle of 20's, and firstly regurarly published in „Obzor” weekly as Pisma iz Italije, and also one writing of the same type, which had not appeared in print earlier. All of the analysed pieces can be called Daeliciae – which, according to the famous Polish historian of civilisation – Antoni Mączak, since the Renaissance had ment a travel guide or a piece of travel writing. At the same time, because of their subject and thematic and formal richness they may be called literary delicacies.The analitic tools used by author of this thesis have their source in the theory of putopis by Croatian travel writting analyst and expert Dean Duda, as well as in the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. The author concentrates especially on his cathegory of the myth elaborated in the context of the romantic travel writting on Italy by Joseph Luzzi. The motives identified by the Italian author, as well as the series of figurations of Venice as a woman that Begović uses in his descritpions of the city, are strongly present in Put po Italiji and clearly show that the Croatian author is strongly anchored in the field of european symbolic imaginery.The thesis touches also upon a question of ambivalent cosmopolitism of the Croatian poet, his fascination by the history and literature, also his perception of contemporary Italian reality and his extraordinary interest in women. Begović is presented as a man of unusual and eclectic sensibilityand and as a strong individualist, which situates him somewhere in-between the Renaissance, Romantic and Modernistic type of traveller. Always open-minded and keen to meeting new people and new situations, Begović takes us not only on a journey around his private map of Italy, but also – by sharing his deepest feelings, experiences and thoughts, on a journey to himself.Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie zbioru literackich relacji z włoskich podróży modernistycznego pisarza chorwackiego Milana Begovicia Put po Italiji. W skład jednotomowego wydania z 1942 roku wchodzi 18 spośród „widokówek”, które powstały w połowie lat '20 XX wieku i które początkowo ukazywały się regularnie w druku w tygodniu „Obzor” jako Pisma iz Italije, a także jeden dodatkowy utwór tego samego typu. Wszystkie analizowane utwory można uznać za Daeliciae – czyli zgodnie z nadawanym pojęciu od renesansu znaczeniem przywoływanym przez wybitnego historyka cywilizacji Antoniego Mączaka, za relacje z podróży, rodzaj przewodnika, ale także za delicje literackie, ze względu na swoją treść i dopracowaną, często wyrafinowaną formę.Pojęcia, które posłużyły autorce jako narzędzia analityczne, pochodzą z teorii putopisu chorwackiego badacza literatury podróżopisarskiej Deana Dudy, jak również z teorii semiotycznej Rolanda Barthes'a. Autorka odwołuje się zwłaszcza do jego kategorii mitu, a także do rozwiniętej na jej podstawie analizy romantycznego mitu Włoch autorstwa Josepha Luzziego. Wątki odkryte przez włoskiego badacza, podobnie zresztą jak seria figuracji Wenecji jako kobiety, którą wykorzystuje w relacjach z tego miasta, są silnie obecne w utworach Begovicia i wskazują na „zagnieżdżenie” chorwackiego autora w europejskiej przestrzeni symbolicznej.W pracy poruszane są również kwestie ambiwalentnego kosmopolityzmu autora, jego fascynacji historią i literaturą, ale także sposób relacjonowania włoskiej współczesności i niezwykła uwaga poświęcana przez podróżnika kobietom. Ukazany zostaje także eklektyzm wrażliwości Begovicia jako podróżnika zawieszonego między wzorcem renesansowym, romantycznym i modernistycznym, a także jego silny indywidualizm. Otwarty na innych ludzi i doświadczenia Begović zabiera nas w końcu w podróż nie tylko po swojej mapie Włoch, ale także, dzieląc się z czytelnikiem najbardziej intymnymi przeżyciami i refleksjami, w podróż do samego siebie
