Discrimination and stigmatization in experience of the elderly people.

The thesis describes a problem of the elderly people being discriminated and stigmatized. The stereotypes and prejudice against the seniors are most often taken as justification for staying indifferent or treating in a bad manner. My thesis refers to the following theories: the symbolic interactionism by G. H. Mead, and his concept of self emergence; a concept of stigmatization described by E. Goffman and E.Czykwin, and discrimination of elderly people based on ageism.The unconstrained interview with the twenty senior citizens of Krakow became a testing technique for this thesis. The results of the research constitute the picture of a senior who is experiencing stigmatization and discrimination in relations with other people.Praca dotyczy problematyki dyskryminacji i stygmatyzacji osób starszych. Stereotypy i uprzedzenia na temat wieku stanowią często usprawiedliwienie dla gorszego, lub obojętnego traktowania seniorów. Praca nawiązuje do teorii interakcjonizmu symbolicznego, w szczególności koncepcji „jaźni odzwierciedlonej” G.H.Mead’a, teorii stygmatyzacji E. Goffmana i E. Czykwin oraz teorii dyskryminacji ze względu na wiek (ageizmu). Zastosowaną techniką badawczą w pracy jest wywiad swobodny przeprowadzony z dwudziestoma osobami starszymi, zamieszkałymi w Krakowie.
