The place of the individual, society and state in the work of Emerson and Thoreau as main representatives of transcendentalism

The master thesis presents the main views of R. W. Emerson and H. D. Thoreau who were the principal representatives of the transcendentalist movement. Their opinions and thoughts about the individual, the society and the state have been discussed on the basis of their written works. Transcendentalism was characteristic of the United States. Nowhere else in the world anything which might resemble this original american school of thought has been developed. What was particularly specific of this movement was optimism and faith in the human capabilities. It was also the idea of the creation of a state which would play a secondary role comparing to society and the individual. The individual and the good of the individual were the most essential things in their opinion. Material values were completely irrelevant comparing to the individual and its need for development and self-realisation. The views they presented were not only original and innovative for these times, but they remain relevant today.The master thesis also contains a short historical description of the United States in the beginning of the XIX century as the events taking place in the time of the Transcendentalists had a considerable influence on their opinions and work. Very often were their texts written in reaction to the events which occurred at that time.W pracy przedstawione są najważniejsze poglądy R. W. Emersona i H. D. Thoreau, którzy byli głównymi przedstawicielami ruchu nazwanego transcendentalizmem. Na podstawie napisanych przez nich tekstów, zostały pokazane ich opinie i przemyślenia na temat jednostki, społeczeństwa i państwa. Transcendentalizm był czymś charakterystycznym, właśnie dla Stanów Zjednoczonych. Nigdzie indziej nie powstało nic, co mogłoby przypominać tą oryginalną myśl amerykańską. Charakterystyczne dla tej myśli były przede wszystkim optymizm i wiara w ludzkie możliwości. Jak również idea utworzenia państwa, które pełniłoby rolę drugoplanową wobec społeczeństwa i jednostki. To jednostka i jej dobro było w ich myśli najistotniejsze. W ich opinii wartości materialne były zupełnie nieistotne, wobec indywiduum jakim był człowiek i jego potrzeba rozwoju i samorealizacji. Przedstawiane przez nich poglądy były nie tylko oryginalne i nowatorskie jak na owe czasy, ale pozostały aktualne do dziś.W pracy został również uwzględniony krótki rys historyczny Stanów Zjednoczonych na początku XIX w., z tego względu, iż współczesne Transcendentalistom wydarzenia miały istotny wpływ na ich poglądy i twórczość. Niejednokrotnie ich teksty były reakcją na wydarzenia, które aktualnie miały miejsce
