The master thesis presents the main views of R. W. Emerson and H. D. Thoreau who were the principal representatives of the transcendentalist movement. Their opinions and thoughts about the individual, the society and the state have been discussed on the basis of their written works. Transcendentalism was characteristic of the United States. Nowhere else in the world anything which might resemble this original american school of thought has been developed. What was particularly specific of this movement was optimism and faith in the human capabilities.
