Aspirations to independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and the problem of territorial integrity of Georgia at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries

The crucial issue discussed in this work is the problem of aspirations to independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia confronted with Georgian nationalism. These considerations are preceded by the review of the most important historical events, which influenced shaping the national consciousness of Georgians, Abkhazians and Ossetians. The second chapter deals with the problem of the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the resulting consequences for the nations in question. The nationalistic policy of the first president of Georgia – Zviad Gamsakhurdia and the period under the rein of Eduard Shevardnadze comes to the fore. The third chapter is devoted to the foundations of consciousness of nations living in Georgia. A special emphasis was put on the role of history in shaping nationalisms. The last chapter constitutes a brief legal analysis of aspirations to independence of Abkhazians and Ossetians.Zasadniczym zagadnieniem podejmowanym w niniejszej pracy jest problem dążeń niepodległościowych Abchazji i Osetii Południowej skonfrontowanych z gruzińskim nacjonalizmem. Rozważania zostały poprzedzone przeglądem najważniejszych wydarzeń historycznych, które wpłynęły na kształtowanie się świadomości narodowej Gruzinów, Abchazów i Osetyjczyków. Drugi rozdział podejmował problem rozpadu ZSRR i wynikających z tego konsekwencji dla omawianych narodów. Na plan pierwszy wysunęła się tutaj nacjonalistyczna polityka pierwszego prezydenta Gruzji – Zwiada Gamsachurdii oraz okres rządów Eduarda Szewardnadze. Trzeci rozdział został poświęcony fundamentom świadomości narodów zamieszkujących państwo gruzińskie. Szczególny nacisk został położony na rolę historii w kształtowaniu się nacjonalizmów. W ostatnim rozdziale natomiast roszczenia niepodległościowe Abchazów i Osetyjczyków zostały poddane krótkiej analizie prawnej
