The subject of this work is description of the phonetics and phonology of Middle Persian, the south-west Iranian language spoken from approx. 3rd c. B.C. to 7th c. A.C. Furthermore, there is described the writing system which was derived from a script called Imperial Aramaic and had several varieties. It was used throughout over 10 centuries (in common usage from 3rd c. A.C. to early Muslim era, but the oldest extant manuscripts come from the 14th c. A.C.). For a number of reasons this system was unable to reflect changes in development of the Middle Persian phonetics. Analyzed are reasons of the writing system inadequacy for phonetics, some of them were related to the copyists’ carelessness, other to the fact that this variety of Aramaic ...
