This master's thesis concentrates on the style and the genesis of the classic American noir cinema (1940-1959). The first chapter shows essential literary sources of film noir, which are the works of Ernest Hemingway and authors associated with the pulp magazine "Black Mask" (among others Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler), as well as of other representatives of the hard-bolied school of writing – James M. Cain, Cornell Woolrich and Mickey Spillane. The following chapter presents the style and cinematic inspirations of the noir cycle, which include German Expressionism, American gangster films, French Poetic Realism, Italian Neorealism, as well as the general, post-war realistic tendency in mainstream American and international cinema. ...
