The Dark Side of Hollywood – Origins and Style of Film Noir

This master's thesis concentrates on the style and the genesis of the classic American noir cinema (1940-1959). The first chapter shows essential literary sources of film noir, which are the works of Ernest Hemingway and authors associated with the pulp magazine "Black Mask" (among others Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler), as well as of other representatives of the hard-bolied school of writing – James M. Cain, Cornell Woolrich and Mickey Spillane. The following chapter presents the style and cinematic inspirations of the noir cycle, which include German Expressionism, American gangster films, French Poetic Realism, Italian Neorealism, as well as the general, post-war realistic tendency in mainstream American and international cinema. The last chapter deals with diverse social, political, philosophical and intellectual determinants, such as post-war social readjustment in the USA, the investigation of Hollywood motion picture industry by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), existentialism and psychoanalysis, which at different times affected American film noir.Niniejsza praca magisterska koncentruje się na stylu oraz genezie amerykańskiego kina noir okresu klasycznego (1940-1959). Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia istotne źródła literackie filmu czarnego, czyli wpływ twórczości Ernesta Hemingwaya, autorów związanych z magazynem pulpowym „Black Mask” (m. in. Dashiell Hammett i Raymond Chandler), a także innych reprezentantów pisarskiej szkoły hard-bolied, takich jak James M. Cain, Cornell Woolrich czy Mickey Spillane. Drugi rozdział prezentuje styl oraz filmowe inspiracje cyklu noir, do których należy zaliczyć niemiecki ekspresjonizm, amerykański film gangsterski, francuski realizm poetycki, włoski neorealizm, jak również ogólną, powojenną tendencję realistyczną w amerykańskim i światowym kinie głównego nurtu. Ostatni rozdział ilustruje różnorodne determinanty społeczne, polityczne, filozoficzne oraz intelektualne, takie jak powojenna adaptacja społeczna w USA, wpływ Komisji do Badania Działalności Antyamerykańskiej (ang. skrót HUAC) na hollywoodzki przemysł filmowy, egzystencjalizm i psychoanaliza, które w różnych okresach oddziaływały na amerykańskie kino czarne
