Urbanism in Ukrainian literature of the 20s and 30s of the 20th Century (literary images of Lviv and Kiev)

The main objective of this thesis is to prove that literary texts contain a real picture of the city, which consists of individual experiences of the writer or a poet and historical context.The first chapter of the work presents the basic issues of theory and history of the formation of cities, the basic strategies used in the description of cities and the most popular urban themes, such as the motif of an underground city, an utopian city, a city through the eyes of Baudelaire's flâneur.The main part of the work discusses the questions of historical and literary processes of the interwar period in Kiev and Lviv and the analysis of selected examples of urban literature. Special attention is paid to the differences between these two cities, which for many years have been under Polish (Lviv) and Soviet (Kiev) influence. For Kiev there are two main images: the revolutionary city and the traditional city with a rich history dating back to the times of Kievan Rus. These images are discussed mainly on literary texts of the Kiev group of Neoclassicists and texts of Ukrainian leading futurist, Mykhail Semenko. Urban literature of Lviv contains apocalyptic, patriotic and criminal images of the city. Literary images are analyzed mainly on the basis of Bohdan Ihor Antonych’s and Volodymyr Havryluk’s poetry and short stories by Bohdan Nyzhankivski.Głównym celem pracy jest próba udowodnienia, że w tekstach literackich odzwierciedla się realny obraz miasta, na który składają się indywidualne doświadczenia pisarza lub poety oraz kontekst historyczny.W pierwszym rozdziale pracy zostały omówione podstawowe zagadnienia związane z teorią i historią powstawania miast, zostały wymienione podstawowe strategie pisania o mieście oraz najpopularniejsze miejskie motywy, jak np. motyw miasta podziemnego, miasta-utopii, miasta oczami baudelair’owskiego flaneura.Główna część pracy jest poświęcona zagadnieniom związanym z procesami historyczno-literackimi dwudziestolecia międzywojennego w Kijowie i Lwowie oraz analizie wybranych tekstów literackich, w których widoczny jest obraz miasta. Dla Kijowa są to obrazy miasta rewolucyjnego oraz miasta tradycyjnego. Obrazy te są omówione przede wszystkim na tekstach literackich kijowskiej grupy poetów nazywanych neoklasykami oraz Mychajla Semenki, czołowego ukraińskiego futurysty.Urbanistyczna literatura na temat Lwowa zawiera obrazy miasta apokaliptycznego, patriotycznego i przestępczego. Literackie obrazy są analizowane głównie na przykładzie poezji B. I. Antonycza i W. Hawryluka oraz opowiadań B. Nyżankiwskiego
