Gangster of extinction. Themes of Jean-Pierre Melville’s art in the contemporary cinema

In the thesis entitled – Gangster of extinction. Themes creativity of Jean-Pierre Melville in the contemporary cinema, the author analyzes the inspiration of Melville`s works in the movies of contemporary directors.The first chapter is a synthesis of the characteristics of Melville's style. The author looks for the genesis of Melville`s work in American noir cinema, French literature, French movies and existential philosophy and then enumerates typical motifs reproduced in his subsequent films.The following chapters are analysis of the characteristics of Melville’s style in the work of American directors (notably Michael Mann and Jim Jarmusch), Asian (movies by John Woo and Sonatine of Takeshi Kitano) and European (pictures by Alain Corneau and The Good Thief of Neil Jordan).W pracy magisterskiej pod tytułem Gangster na wymarciu. Motywy twórczości Jean-Pierre’a Melville’a we współczesnym kinie autor dokonuje analizy inspiracji dziełami Melville’a w filmach współczesnych reżyserów.Pierwszy rozdział stanowi syntezę charakterystycznych cech stylu Melville’a. Autor doszukuje się genezy jego twórczości w amerykańskim kinie noir, francuskojęzycznej literaturze, w kinematografii francuskiej oraz filozofii egzystencjalnej, a następnie wylicza typowe motywy powielane w kolejnych jego filmach.Kolejne rozdziały służą analizie przejętych cech stylu Melville’a w twórczości reżyserów amerykańskich (głównie Michaela Manna i Jima Jarmuscha), azjatyckich (filmy Johna Woo i Sonatina Takeshiego Kitano) oraz europejskich (obrazy Alaina Corneau i Podwójny blef Neila Jordana)
