Chronic sleep deprivation has adverse effects on cognitive performance, mood and motor functions. Sustained attention is drastically affected by periods without sleep. Two processes have impact on neurobehavioral function: circadian and homeostatic. Their interaction determines effectiveness of cognitive functioning.The present study examined the effects of 21 h of chronic (7 days) sleep deprivation and of time-of-day on latency of saccadic eye movements. Oculomotor performance was assessed at the following hours: 10:00-11:00, 14:00-15:00, 18:00-19:00, and 22:00-23:00.
