The translation of terminology based on the example of the feminist terminology used in the book entitled Gender Trouble by Judith Butler

The main subject of this MA thesis is the problem related to translation of terminology and specialist language. Most of the texts, especially the scientific ones, which are produced abroad reach the Polish and Slovak languages via translations. Then, a problem which is rarely discussed in the translation theory, appears – the translator themselves must often create terms for the target language, as well as identify them correctly and translate those which have already been used in the discourse of a given field.More and more often terminology is considered a separate field of science, however, still there are not many papers, which would systematise its achievements and discuss its methodological potential. Due to the numerous connections with other fields of science such as, for instance, linguistics, logic, sociology or lexicography, terminology has many methodological systems at its disposal and various possibilities in regard to the direction of the studies.The terminological systems, as sets of terms from given fields, should be treated with particular attention when their translation takes place.In this paper, the terminology related to the feminist and gender studies used in the book entitled Gender Trouble by Judith Butler was selected as an example. The feminist terminology is very interesting because it was created relatively not long ago and this process is still going on.The translator in the process of translation must make many choices, especially if they translate a text from the field which is relatively young and its terminology has not been systematised and rooted in the language yet. The translator should have the professional knowledgesufficing to translate a text with preservation of its scientific character, so that the text would be clear and understandable and the terms used in it would be correct.Głównym tematem nieniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest problem tłumaczenia terminologii oraz języka specjalistycznego. Większość tekstów, zwłaszcza naukowych, które powstają za granicą, trafia do języka polskiego i słowackiego za pośrednictwem tłumaczeń. Wówczas pojawia się problem, który rzadko jest omawiany w teorii przekładu – tłumacz często musi sam stworzyć terminy dla języka docelowego i poprawnie zidentyfikować oraz przetłumaczyć te, które już są używane w dyskursie danej dziedziny. Terminologia coraz częściej jest uznawana za odrębną dziedzinę nauki, nadal jednak niewiele jest prac, które systematyzowałyby jej osiągnięcia oraz omawiały jej możliwości metodologiczne. Ze względu na liczne związki z innymi dziedzinami nauki, jak na przykład językoznawstwo, logika, socjologia czy leksykografia, terminologia ma do dyspozycji wiele systemów metodologicznych i różne możliwości w zakresie kierunku badań.Systemy terminologiczne, jako zbiory terminów danych dziedzin, powinny być traktowane ze szczególną uwagę, kiedy dochodzi do ich tłumaczenia. W niniejszej pracy jako przykład wybrano terminologię z zakresu badań feministycznych i genderowych użytych w książce Gender Trouble autorstwa Judith Butler. Terminologia feministyczna jest niezwykle interesująca dzięki temu, że powstała stosunkowo niedawno, a proces ten wciąż trwa. Tłumacz w procesie przekładu musi dokonywać wielu wyborów, zwłaszcza, jeżeli tłumaczy tekst dziedziny, która jest stosunkowo młoda i jej terminologia jeszcze nie jest usystematyzowana i zakorzeniona w języku. Tłumacz powinien posiadać wiedzę fachową wystarczającą, aby przetłumaczyć tekst wraz z zachowaniem jego walorów naukowych, tak, aby był jasny i zrozumiały, a użyte w nim terminy były poprawne
