The historiosophical pessimism as a form of social consciousness

The purpose of this paper is to propose an interpretation of the historiosophical pessimism (or cultural catastrophism) as a form of social consciousness.In terms of the sociology of social change, cultural catastrophism can be interpreted as a pessimistic vision of social change in which the idea of human/ social agency is rejected and a fatalistic account of historical process is proposed instead.In terms of Karl Mannheim's sociology of knowledge, catastrophism is an example of philosophy transcending social reality. It is therefore justified to analyze it as a form of ideology or utopia.Chapter one of this paper (titled "The definition and various types of catstrophism") explores the meaning of the term "catastrophism".In chapter two (titled "The emergence of historiosophical consciousness") social consciousness is defined and different philosophies of history are anlyzed.Chapter three (titled "An outline of sociological theory of catastrophism") discusses Piotr Sztompka's theory of social becoming and Karl Mannheim's sociology of knowledge as well as their application to the paper's subject. Chapter Four (titled "Catastrophism as exemplified by Marian Zdziechowski's and Oswald Spengler's thought") discusses the work of two distinguished authors of catastrophical theories.Celem niniejszej pracy jest interpretacja katastrofizmu jako formy świadomości społecznej. Z punktu widzenia socjologii zmian społecznych, katastrofizm jest pesymistyczną teorią zmian społecznych, która neguje ludzką/ społeczną podmiotowość, podporządkowując obserwacje historyczne fatalistycznym schematom teoretycznym. Z punktu widzenia socjologii wiedzy, katastrofizm jest przykładem filozoficznego „transcendowania bytu społecznego” (w sensie Mannheima). Z tego względu może być on interpretowany jako forma myśli ideologicznej lub utopijnej, pomimo że jest to sprzeczne z dosłownymi antyutopijnymi deklaracjami autorów – katastrofistów. Rozdział pierwszy („Definicja i odmiany katastrofizmu”) omawia różne znaczenia terminu oraz propozycje typologii stanowisk katastroficznych.Rozdział drugi („Kształtowanie się świadomości historiozoficznej. Katastrofizm jako pesymistyczna filozofia dziejów”) definiuje świadomość społeczną oraz analizuje rozmaite doktryny z zakresu filozofii dziejów.Rozdział trzeci („Szkic socjologicznej teorii katastrofizmu”) jest poświęcony teorii stawania się społeczeństwa Piotra Sztompki oraz socjologii wiedzy Karla Mannheima jako narzędziom przydatnym w analizie katastrofizmu.Rozdział czwarty („Katastrofizm na przykładzie myśli Oswald Spenglera i Mariana Zdziechowskiego”) omawia twórczość dwóch prominentnych katastrofistów z zastosowaniem wcześniej wypracowanych kategorii
