History of Samos in archaic period (until 522 B. C.)

The theme of this thesis is history of the island of Samos in the archaic period, to 522 B. C. It is divided into four chapters. In first chapter preliminary issues have been discussed - characterized the sources on which work is based, and presented general information about the island such as natural conditions, or etymology of the name. The second chapter is an attempt to reconstruct the political situation on the island in VII and VI century B.C. The turn of these centuries is extremely important for the history of the island, since then tyranny began. Interpreting the sources of Polycrates - one of the most famous Greek tyrants was concluded in the third chapter. This chapter is an attempt to characterize the rule of Polycrates. This chapter shows also how the tyrant was seen by ancient authors. The fourth chapter concerns the most famous of Samian buildings - the temple of Hera (Heraion). It draws on sources both literary and archaeological, which are an essential tool to study the history of the islands from the VII century backwards.Chronological scope of work covers the period up to the year 522 (the death of Polycrates). This procedure is not accidental. It is true that after the year 522 of Samos was ruled by tyrants yet, but Polycrates is the last ruler, who ruled the independent island. Later Samos never gained power and prestige it had during the reign of Polycrates. For this reason, the researchers apply to the island of slightly different chronology of calling time for the 522 year polycratean perion, and after 522 post-polycratean.Tematem niniejszej pracy są dzieje wyspy Samos w okresie archaicznym, do 522 roku . Podzielona została na cztery rozdziały. W pierwszym z nich omówione zostały zagadnienia wstępne – scharakteryzowano źródła, na których praca się opiera oraz zaprezentowano ogólne informacje na temat wyspy takie jak warunki naturalne, czy etymologia nazwy. Rozdział drugi stanowi próbę rekonstrukcji sytuacji politycznej na wyspie w wieku VII i VI. Przełom tychże wieków jest niezwykle istotny dla historii wyspy, ponieważ wtedy rozpoczęły się rządy tyranów. Interpretacja źródeł dotyczących Polikratesa – jednego z najbardziej znanych greckich tyranów została zawarta w rozdziale trzecim. Rozdział ten oprócz próby charakterystyki rządów Polikratesa analizuje także to, w jaki sposób tyran był postrzegany przez autorów antycznych. Rozdział czwarty dotyczy najsławniejszej samijskiej budowli – świątyni Hery (Heraion). Wykorzystano w nim zarówno źródła literackie, jak i archeologiczne, które są niezbędnym narzędziem do badań dziejów wyspy od wieku VII wstecz.Zakres chronologiczny pracy obejmuje okres do roku 522, czyli do śmierci Polikratesa. Jest to zabieg nieprzypadkowy. Co prawda po roku 522 na Samos rządzili jeszcze tyrani, jednak Polikrates jest ostatnim samijskim władcą, który rządził niezależną wyspą. W późniejszym czasie Samos już nigdy nie uzyskała siły i prestiżu jaki miała w czasie rządów Polikratesa. Z tego powodu badacze stosują w odniesieniu do wyspy trochę inną chronologię nazywając czas przed 522 rokiem okresem polikratejskim, natomiast po 522 roku post-polikratejskim
