The thesis analyses five film adaptations of Jane Austen's novel “ Pride and Prejudice”: the ones directed by Robert Z. Leonard in 1940, by Cyril Coke in 1980, by Simon Langton in 1995, by Joe Wright in 2005 and finally by Gurinder Chadha in 2004. The purpose of this paper is to examine how these films use the text of the novel to convey their own, particular meaning. That is why each film is being analysed in a different context. In the first adaptation, the conflicts which are present in the novel are mitigated in order to create a comic effect.
