Working on the Little Bit of Ivory with a Brush: Five Film Adaptations of Jane Austen's

The thesis analyses five film adaptations of Jane Austen's novel “ Pride and Prejudice”: the ones directed by Robert Z. Leonard in 1940, by Cyril Coke in 1980, by Simon Langton in 1995, by Joe Wright in 2005 and finally by Gurinder Chadha in 2004. The purpose of this paper is to examine how these films use the text of the novel to convey their own, particular meaning. That is why each film is being analysed in a different context. In the first adaptation, the conflicts which are present in the novel are mitigated in order to create a comic effect. In the second film, the most important subject seems to be the inner struggle of the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, stuck between the reason and feelings. The second adaptation emphasises the aspects which are only signalised in Austen's novel, namely sex, romance and money. At the same time, it extends the role of the main male protagonist, Mr. Darcy. What seems to be crucial in Joe Wright's film is the construction of Elizabeth Bennet's character as a modernised version of the novel's protagonist and remaining in contrast to Mr. Darcy who is presented as a typical Byronic hero. The last of the discussed adaptations locates the plot in modern India and deals with the subject of cultural differences. This thesis proves that each of these films uses the plot of “Pride and Prejudice” in its own way to revive the novel's meanings. As pointed out in the conclusions, Austen's work continues to inspire numerous filmmakers and leaves the door open for constant reinterpretation of its message by the viewers.W pracy analizowanych jest pięć filmowych adaptacji powieści Jane Austen „Duma i uprzedzenie”. Są to: ekranizacja Roberta Z. Leonarda z 1940 roku, Cyrila Coke'a z 1980 roku, Simona Langtona z 1995 roku, Joego Wrighta z 2005 roku oraz Gurinder Chadhy z 2004 roku. Cel pracy stanowi zbadanie, jak poszczególne dzieła posługują się tekstem powieści do budowania odrębnych, swoistych znaczeń, dlatego każdy z utworów analizowany jest w innym kontekście. W pierwszym z nich konflikty obecne w powieściowym oryginale zostały złagodzone tak, iż w rezultacie film jest przede wszystkim komedią. W drugim natomiast na pierwszy plan wysuwa się motyw wewnętrznej walki toczonej przez bohaterkę, Elizabeth Bennet, w sporze między głosem własnego serca a rozumem. Kolejna adaptacja akcentuje wątki subtelnie zasygnalizowane w powieści – seksu, romansu i pieniędzy – rozbudowując przy tym rolę głównego męskiego bohatera, pana Darcy'ego. W filmie Joego Wrighta najistotniejsza wydaje się konstrukcja postaci Elizabeth Bennet, która jest uwspółcześnioną wersją powieściowej heroiny i kontrastuje z postacią pana Darcy'ego, stylizowanego na bohatera bajronicznego. Ostatnia zaś z omawianych ekranizacji przenosi akcję do współczesnych Indii i porusza przede wszystkim tematy związane z kulturową odmiennością. Jak dowodzi analiza, każdy z wymienionych filmów na własny użytek odczytuje „Dumę i uprzedzenie” i aktualizuje jej znaczenia. Zakończenie pracy wykazuje, że kino nie ustaje w wysiłkach mierzenia się z powieścią, zmuszając odbiorców do nieustannej reinterpretacji jej przesłania
