Analysis of the translations of medical questionnaires made with the use of different translation methods

The following work describes different methods used for translating medical questionnaires and presents the analysis of the translations of two questionnaires. Medical questionnaire translation is the area of translation which has recently started to play an important role. Medical questionnaires should be translated with the use of translation methods ensuring the proper adaptation in the target culture by virtue of the questionnaires’ destination.The first chapter of this work presents the theoretical background of translation studies. It describes the role of culture in translation, the cultural turn in translation and cross cultural research. This chapter also presents cross cultural medical research as a separate branch of cross cultural research and thoroughly describes differences between them.The second chapter shows the cognitive view on translation. There are the following issues included in the chapter: equivalence, imaging and its aspects, levels of categorization and conceptual metaphors. All these elements play a crucial role in a translation analysis and were used in the fourth chapter.The third chapter precisely describes the most popular translation methods used by organizations dealing with medical questionnaires and shows their pros and cons.The fourth chapter is an analysis of the translations of two medical questionnaires. Each questionnaire was translated with the use of four translation methods described in the previous chapter. The author chooses parts of translations in respect of differences between them and their possible influence on the target reader.The fifth chapter is devoted to conclusions on the analysis. The analysis shows that complicated translation methods do not ensure the cultural adaptation of translated questionnaires. According to the author, these methods are time and cost consuming. Tłumaczenie kwestionariuszy medycznych stanowi dziedzinę tłumaczenia, która w ostatnich latach zaczęła odgrywać istotną rolę. Ze względu na przeznaczenie kwestionariuszy medycznych ich tłumaczenia muszą zostać sporządzone zgodnie z metodami zapewniającymi odpowiednią adaptację w kulturze docelowej.Pierwszy rozdział niniejszej pracy przedstawia tło teoretyczne przekładoznawstwa. Opisana została w nim rola kultury w tłumaczeniach oraz zwrot kulturowy, jak również badania międzykulturowe. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia również międzykulturowe badania medyczne jako odrębną dziedzinę badań międzykulturowych oraz dokładnie wyjaśnia różnice między nimi.Rozdział drugi pokazuje kognitywne sposoby postrzegania tłumaczenia. Zawarte w nim zostały następujące zagadnienia: ekwiwalencja, obrazowanie i jego aspekty, poziomy kategoryzacji oraz metafory pojęciowe. Wszystkie te elementy stanowią kluczowe zagadnienia w analizie tłumaczeń i wykorzystane zostały w rozdziale czwartym.Rozdział trzeci dokładnie opisuje najbardziej popularne metody tłumaczeniowe wykorzystywane przez organizacje zajmujące się kwestionariuszami medycznymi, przedstawiając ich zalety i wady. Rozdział czwarty stanowi analizę tłumaczeń dwóch kwestionariuszy medycznych. Każdy kwestionariusz przetłumaczony został przy użyciu czterech metod tłumaczeniowych opisanych w poprzednim rozdziale. Autor analizuje wybrane fragmenty tłumaczeń zwracając uwagę na rozbieżności między nimi oraz ich ewentualny wpływ na użytkownika docelowego.Rozdział piąty stanowi wnioski do analizy tłumaczeń. Z analizy tej wynika, że skomplikowane metody tłumaczeniowe nie przynoszą pożądanego efektu jakim jest adaptacja kulturowa tłumaczonej wersji kwestionariusza. Zdaniem autora metody te są czasochłonne i wymagają zbyt dużych nakładów finansowych. Zamiast używania skomplikowanych metod tłumaczeniowych autor sugeruje zwrócenie większej uwagi na sposób rekrutacji odpowiednich tłumaczy
