The main objective of the thesis entitled “Can Mexico be named a failed state? The drug cartels problem during the presidency of Felipe Calderon” was an attempt to answer the above mentioned question. The paper consists of two fundamental parts. The first part includes two initial chapters and presents the concept of “failed state” and difficulties in defining this term. It also describes the most important research centers which deal with this subject. This part presents indicators of instability and analysis of the situation in Mexico based on the above mentioned indicators.The remaining chapters illustrate the events in Mexico from 2006 until now, with a particular focus on drug production and drug trafficking as well as corruption, weak...
