The Foreignness of the Self. Michael Haneke’s Play with Reality in German period: The Seventh Continent, Benny's Video, 71 Fragments, Funny Games

The thesis titled The Foreignness of the Self. Michael Haneke’s Play with Reality explores the first German period of work by Austrian director excluding his movies for television. The main focus of this thesis is the question of realism and media as basic mechanisms of violence within visual culture from Plato to contemporary media critics. The author discuss with actual media theories by Jean Baudrillard, Paul Virilio, Friedrich Nietzsche and other significant media philosophers and additionally conveys classic ideas according to Plato, Aristotle, Schiller and Auerbach.The author has chosen four titles in Haneke’s filmography: The Seventh Continent, Benny’s Video, 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance and Funny Games. The selection was made because of conscious and expressive style which have been formed during the first German period and which is present in subsequent movies such as Hidden, The Piano Teacher and The White Ribbon. The topics which Haneke develops are: alienation, loneliness, violence and representation. The first chapter, which contains the analysis of The Seventh Continent and 71 fragments, sets the context of realism as the system of false representation in literature and cinema. The second chapter explores questions how the medium and his frame exist and how the image is manipulated. The last chapter contains the interpretation of Funny Games, Haneke’s dialogue with language and objects. This three sections address key issue – violence as the process constituted by social (democratic), objective, representative and physical factors.Pracę pod tytułem Obcość Własnego. Gry Michaela Haneke z rzeczywistością poświęcono pierwszemu, niemieckojęzycznemu okresowi twórczości austriackiego reżysera przy wyłączeniu filmów telewizyjnych. Wiodącą tezą, jaką postawił sobie autor tej pracy, jest problem realizmu oraz mediów jako podstawowych mechanizmów przemocy w kulturze wizualnej od Platona po współczesnych krytyków mediów. W pracy podjęto dialog z aktualnymi teoriami dotyczącymi problematyki medium w ujęciu Jeana Baudrillarda, Paula Virilio, Friedricha Nietzschego oraz kilku innych znaczących filozofów mediów. W pracy zreinterpretowano również „klasyczne” teorie Platona, Arystotelesa, Schillera oraz Auerbacha.Autor w swojej interpretacji wybrał cztery tytuły z filmografii Michaela Haneke. Są to: Siódmy kontynent, Benny’s Video, 71 fragmentów oraz Funny Games. Zdaniem autora wybór ten jest o tyle właściwy, o ile świadczy o kształtowaniu się świadomego, wyrazistego stylu reżysera, który zaowocuje takimi arcydziełami, jak Ukryte, Pianistka oraz Biała wstążka. W tych czterech filmach Michaela Haneke pojawiają się tematy, które reżyser będzie twórczo rozwijał w francuskojęzycznym okresie swojej twórczości: alienacja, samotność, przemoc oraz reprezentacja.W pierwszym rozdziale, dotyczącym Siódmego kontynentu oraz 71 fragmentów, wchodzących w zakres tzw. trylogii zlodowacenia podjęto próbę opisu realizmu jako systemu fałszywej reprezentacji zarówno w literaturze, jak i filmie. W rozdziale drugim autor poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytanie, czym jest medium i rama go ograniczająca oraz jak potrafi ono manipulować obrazem. Rozdział ten został poświęcony środkowej części austriackiej trylogii. Ostatni rozdział natomiast poświęcony jest Funny Games, filmowi, w którym Haneke rozprawia się z językiem oraz przedmiotami. Wszystkie te trzy rozdziały spaja nadrzędna idea – przemoc pojęta jako przemoc społeczna (demokratyczna), przemoc rzeczy, przemoc reprezentacji oraz przemoc fizyczna
