Transhalogenation reaction bases on displacing halogen atom from one molecula to other. This process referes to chlorine atom mainly, because its concentration is quite high in physiological state. During the inflammination a lot of chloride ions form the hypochloric acid (HOCl). Myelopreoxidase is the catalyst of this reaction. Activated neutrophils are among the most potent sources of hypochloric acid and produce other reactive oxygen species (ROS).
