The main purpose of the thesis was to prove that gossipy character of Suetonius' literary work is a consequence of rethorical nature of expression used by author. To do so, the detailed analysis of author's biography with particular emphasis on rethorical experience, was made in the first chapter. The same chapter includes also objections to Suetonius presented mainly by modern historians. In the second chapter all objections to Suetonius were confronted with ambitions, both rhetorical and literary, of the author. It contains accurate definitions of the terms 'gossip' and 'rethoric' with respect to Suetonius' work.
