In this thesis, the author asks the question about the Japanese sexual images on the example of woodcut prints called ukiyo-e shunga from the Edo Period (1600-1868), as well as modern Japanese comics and animation – manga and anime. Are they pornography, eroticism, or art. The question is answered by comparing the generally accepted definitions of these concepts with the detailed descriptions of the images mentioned above. Before the comparison, the author explains what precisely are shunga woodcut prints, manga and anime. How the period, when they have been created, the surroundings, the people that have been an inspiration for them, and the technique of their production, has determined the way such sexual images have been depicted.
