Lead - his toxicity to mammals

The purpose of this work was showing, on the basis of literature data, of problem of the toxicity of the lead for mammals, with special taking into account the man. The discussed most essential effects of interacting of this metal with living organism, both adult and young. The particular attention was devoted to mechanisms of the toxic action and of the relation of the accumulation of the lead in tissues and organs from the given dose. The direct threat for life forms, including human, there is air polluted with the lead. A contact with toxic dust and a food contaminated with this metal are alternative sources of exposures. The lead causes damage to many organs about the different degree of the intensity, from transitional functional changes, until long-lasting organic changes. The most exposures there is a developing nervous system, in which this element can cause disadvantageous changes, bonded e.g. with stopping the intellectual development. We are observing the detrimental effect of this metal also to the hematological system and kidneys. Children are most susceptible to the action of the lead, due to the developmental period appearing at them, pregnant women and occupationally exposed persons.Celem niniejszej pracy było ukazanie, na podstawie danych literaturowych, problemu toksyczności ołowiu dla ssaków, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem człowieka. Zostały w niej omówione najistotniejsze efekty oddziaływania tego metalu na organizm żywy, zarówno dorosły jak i młody. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono mechanizmom działania toksycznego oraz zależności akumulacji ołowiu w tkankach i narządach od podanej dawki. Bezpośrednim zagrożeniem dla organizmów żywych, w tym człowieka, jest zanieczyszczone ołowiem powietrze. Innymi źródłami narażenia są kontakt z toksycznym pyłem oraz skażona tym metalem żywność. Ołów powoduje uszkodzenia wielu narządów o różnym stopniu nasilenia, od przejściowych zmian funkcjonalnych, aż po trwałe zmiany organiczne. Najbardziej narażony jest rozwijający się układ nerwowy, w którym pierwiastek ten może powodować niekorzystne zmiany, związane np. z zahamowaniem rozwoju umysłowego. Szkodliwy wpływ tego metalu obserwujemy także na układ krwiotwórczy i nerki. Najbardziej podatne na działanie ołowiu są dzieci, z uwagi na występujący u nich okres rozwojowy, kobiety w ciąży oraz osoby narażone zawodowo
