Population size of raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in a selected area of the Carpathian Mountains

Raccoon Dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is an invasive, alien species in Europe, occurring also in Poland. Little is known about its ecology, particularly on impact on the native fauna. This mammal orginated from eastern Asia. The species was introduced into several former Soviet Republics since the late 20's to late 50's of 20th century. Afterwards, extension of geographical range took place throughout other countries. Raccoon dog in Poland is monitored by the Polish Hunting Association and the State Forests. Population of this canid in the Carpathian region is poorly known. The main goal of the thesis was characteristics of this population. The letter with questions was sent to selected institutions to reveal the abundance and numbers of the species in the Polish Carpathians. The data covered years 2003-2008. Information concerning was collected from the 36 forest districts and 6 national parks. Raccoon dog was confirmed in 36 institutions. The raccoon dog population size was estimated and the abundance was determined. About 68 individuals were confirmed in the year 2003, while in 2006 already 400 animals. In 2008, survey confirmed presence of 760 raccoon dogs in the study area. Average mean annual rate Xn of raccoon dog relative abundance was calculated for each institution. Occupancy rate was estimated to W= 0,8 in last analyzed year. Which means a relative high rate of presence of the species. Currently, this infrequent carnivore occur in five Carpathian national parks and nearly in all forest divisions, except for a few mountain forest districts near the border with Slovakia and Ukraine, while anecdotal data about the raccoon dog-like animal came from another forest districts on the basis of direct observations. The most stable population of this alien canid occur along Vistula valley in the north of the region and the northeastern part of the Carpathian Mountains, near to Przemysl. Raccoon dog appeared in the Carpathians in the 60’s, then its abundance differed significantly. Raccoon dog population as a result of the exclusion from the list of game species between 1998 and 2001 increased and colonized previously unoccupied habitats. Population growth rate (PGR) of the raccoon dog population in the Carpathians in analyzed period equaled to 10.1%. Further fate of the raccoon dog in the Carpathian Mountains is unknown, however presumed to further development and migration towards west direction of the country.Jenot (Nyctereutes procyonoides) jest w Europie obcym gatunkiem inwazyjnym, występującym także w Polsce. Niewiele wiadomo o jego ekologii, a szczególnie jego wpływie na rodzimą faunę. Ssak ten pochodzi ze wschodniej części Azji. Gatunek został introdukowany do kilku byłych republik Związku Radzieckiego od późnych lat 20 do późnych 50.uw. Później nastąpiło rozszerzenie zasięgu geograficznego gatunku na tereny innych krajów Europy. Stan bieżący populacji jenota w Polsce jest monitorowany przez Polski Związek Łowiecki oraz Lasy Państwowe. Populacja tego gatunku w tym rejonie Karpat jest mało znana. Celem pracy była charakterystyka tej populacji. Dane dotyczyły lat 2003-2008. Zebrano informacje dotyczące jenota pochodzące z 36 nadleśnictw i 6 parków narodowych. Potwierdzono obecność jenota na terenie 36 instytucji. Scharakteryzowano stan populacji jenota oraz określono liczebność gatunku w polskiej części Karpat. Około 68 osobników zinwentaryzowano w 2003 roku, natomiast w roku 2006 stwierdzono już 400 zwierząt. W roku 2008 w badanym obszarze potwierdzono obecność 760 jenotów. Określono średni roczny współczynnik liczebności Xn dla poszczególnych instytucji. W ostatnim 2008 roku współczynnik W występowania określono na 0,8. Co oznacza stosunkowo wysoki wskaźnik obecności jenota. Jenot występuje w pięciu karpackich parkach narodowych oraz prawie wszystkich nadleśnictwach, za wyjątkiem kilku nadleśnictw górskich przy granicy ze Słowacją i Ukrainą. Natomiast niepotwierdzone dane o pojawieniu się jenota w kolejnych nadleśnictwach zostały oparte na bezpośrednich obserwacjach. Najbardziej stabilna populacja jenota występuje w dolinie Wisły, na północy badanego obszaru oraz w północno-wschodniej części Karpat, w okolicach Przemyśla. Jenot pojawił się w Karpatach w latach 60-tych, później jego liczebność ulegała znacznym wahaniom. Na skutek zaprzestania polowań między 1998 a 2001 rokiem gatunek zwiększył swoją liczebność. Populacyjny współczynnik tempa wzrostu populacji PGR w trakcie badanych lat określono na 10,1%. Dalszy los jenota w Karpatach jest nieznany, można jednak przewidzieć jego dalszy rozwój i migrację w kierunku zachodnim
