This thesis concerns the character of Elizabeth I of England. Author presents Elizabeth’s ambivalent attitude towards marriage resulting from her two different standpoints: the one of a woman and the one of a queen. Particular parts of the work show that these two points of view were impossible to reconcile. In the first decade of her rule (1558-1568) the queen's marriage was a main subject discussed by the Council members and the Parliament. The analysis of Elizabeth’s response to the matter under discussion and the way of conducting her marriage negotiations shows that the Queen of England did not want to get married.
