The apocryphal Correspondence between Seneca and St Paul - the analysis

The thesis: „The apocryphal Correspondence between Seneca and St Paul - the analysis” is an attempt to present some questions concerning this Correspondence.In the introduction authoress outlines the problem of establishment of lists of the Bible's books using by various groups of worshippers. She also explains a term apocrypha. In the first chapter she writes about apocrypha (the writings named in this way by Catholics) and considers if Correspondence is similar to another writings. In the second chapter you can read the summary of these Letters based on the translation of ks. K. Obrycki. In next chapter authoress mentions testimonies of authors lived in the Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance who wrote about Seneca – Christian and about Correspondence. She tries to justify the legend about friendship between philosopher and St Paul. In the fourth chapter you can read argumentation against the authenticity of Correspondence and get to know about time, author and aim of the Letters. In the fifth chapter authoress wants to find reasons of unusual popularity of philosopher between Christians. The ending contains a reflection about the influence of popularity of these Letters on the amount of Seneca's writings preserved up to this day. The thesis is mainly based on the edition of Correspondence with the commentary of C.Barlow and on the articles of ks. K. Obrycki.Praca licencjacka pt. „Wokół apokryficznej Korespondencji Seneki ze św. Pawłem” jest próbą omówienia kilku znaczących kwestii dotyczących tego apokryfu. We wstępie nakreślona zostaje kwestia kształtowania się kanonów Pisma Świętego używanych przez różne wyznania oraz wynikającego stąd różnego rozumienia słowa apokryf. Rozdział pierwszy podejmuje problematykę istnienia apokryfów (w sensie, jakim tego określenia używa Kościół katolicki) i miejsca, jakie wśród nich zajmuje omawiana Korespondencja. W rozdziale drugim czytelnik może zapoznać się ze streszczeniem Listów dokonanym na podstawie przekładu ks. K. Obryckiego. W kolejnym rozdziale autorka przedstawia świadectwa autorów wczesnochrześcijańskich, średniowiecznych i nowożytnych o Senece - chrześcijaninie i Korespondencji, a także analizuje historyczne przesłanki dla uzasadnienia możliwości zawiązania się przyjaźni pomiędzy Seneką a św. Pawłem. Rozdział czwarty poświęcony jest wykazaniu nieautentyczności Listów oraz próbie ustalenia faktów bezspornych w kwestii datacji, autorstwa i celu ich napisania. W rozdziale piątym autorka bada przyczyny niezwykłej popularności Seneki w kręgach chrześcijańskich. Zakończenie zawiera refleksję na temat wpływu popularności Korespondencji na ilość zachowanych dzieł Seneki. Praca oparta jest w dużej mierze na wydaniu z komentarzem Claude Barlowa oraz artykułach ks. K. Obryckiego
