Social and Cultural Factors of Female Self-Mutilation

The work is devoted to the phenomenon of female moderate self-mutilation. Various psychological, physiological, social and cultural factors contribute to the occurrence of self-mutilation. The author of the M.A. dissertation does not negate the existence of the former, nor does she downscale the role that they play in the etiology of self-injury behaviors. However, she postulates to emphasize other factors, and she pinpoints her interest to the socio-cultural aspects, which are not only determinant of the self-mutilation persistence within the population, but they also highly impact the social and moral evaluations of the phenomenon, categorizing certain practices of self-mutilation as either socially acceptable or deviant. Two main themes of the work include gendered diversification of moderate self-mutilation within the population, and voicing protest against their perception as pathological. The author was unable to conclude whether moderate self-mutilation is a specifically female practice. The data on the phenomenon in population are imprecise, and research results are often incomparable due to the significant methodological differences they bear. Lack of conclusive results aside, there are cultural traits of more proliferation of moderate self-mutilation among women, especially when one connects the latter to the other types of self-destructive behaviors, such as eating disorders for example. The author is attempting to look at cultural factors behind moderate self-mutilation practices among women. She followed the frameworks of the sociological studies of the body, socialization theory, and sociology of social control, norms and deviance, all in order to closely examine this phenomenon.Praca poświęcona jest zjawisku samouszkodzeń umiarkowanych u kobiet. Na ich wystąpienie mają wpływ czynniki psychofizyczne, społeczne i kulturowe. Autorka pracy nie neguje istnienia tych pierwszych oraz nie lekceważy roli, jaką pełnią one w etiologii zachowań samouszkadzających. Proponuje natomiast odmienne rozłożenie akcentów i skierowanie zainteresowania na czynniki społeczno-kulturowe, które decydują nie tylko o wystąpieniu samookaleczeń w populacji, lecz przesądzają o ich wartościowaniu i przyporządkowaniu danej praktyki do kategorii samouszkodzeń społecznie akceptowanych lub dewiacyjnych. Dwa główne wątki zarysowane w pracy to kwestia płciowego (rodzajowego) zróżnicowania samouszkodzeń umiarkowanych w populacji oraz sprzeciw wobec patologizowania takich zachowań. Autorce nie udało się rozstrzygnąć, czy samouszkodzenia umiarkowane są praktykami typowo kobiecymi. Dane dotyczące występowania samookaleczeń w populacji okazują się nieprecyzyjne, a wyniki badań często trudne do porównania ze względu na dzielące je różnice metodologiczne. Istnieją jednak kulturowe przesłanki częstszego występowania samouszkodzeń umiarkowanych u kobiet, zwłaszcza jeśli powiąże się je z innymi typami zachowań autodestruktywnych, głównie z zaburzeniami łaknienia.
