The work is devoted to the phenomenon of female moderate self-mutilation. Various psychological, physiological, social and cultural factors contribute to the occurrence of self-mutilation. The author of the M.A. dissertation does not negate the existence of the former, nor does she downscale the role that they play in the etiology of self-injury behaviors. However, she postulates to emphasize other factors, and she pinpoints her interest to the socio-cultural aspects, which are not only determinant of the self-mutilation persistence within the population, but they also highly impact the social and moral evaluations of the phenomenon, categorizing certain practices of self-mutilation as either socially acceptable or deviant.
