Hungarian Poles. Cultivating Polish culture in Hungary.

SummaryThe history of Polish-Hungarian friendship can be traced back for over a thousand years and can be considered unique and exceptional in the formation of both nations. It is the mutual respect and friendship between them that allow for such a long history Poland and Hungary share. The focus of this thesis is the theme of cultivation of Polish culture in Hungary.My aim is to present the presence of Poles in Hungary from their first appearance at the beginning of the tenth century up until today.In the first chapter I explain key terms which I use throughout my thesis, for example: culture, cultural identity, nation, minority and diaspora, colloquially Polonia.In the second chapter I elaborate on the history of Poles on the territory of Hungary.I stress the significance of various issues regarding the Hungarian Poles, including the reasons and circumstances of Poles arrival in Hungary, as well as the their cultivation of national traditions at varoius moments in history.In the third and last chapter I have chosen to analyze the most significant Polish organizations and institutions, their origins and cultural activity.Poles in Hungary have created many unique cultural values and they continue to do so.I have to admit that my interest in the topic is determined by the fact that I come from a Polish-Hungarian family, therefore the theme is present in my daily life.The history of Poles in Hungary (“on Hungarian soil") is almost as long as the history of the country. The reasons for emigration from Poland varied at different historical moments. Among the reasons can be found political relations, general migratory tendencies, reaction to national uprisings and World Wars. Poles coming to Hungary experienced warm welcome and great help and hospitality from the Hungarian nation. During the Second World War Hungary was the only country where the Poles could receive education on every level. Children could attend primary school, continue with secondary education, and finally go to university.The Polish community set up its first organizations beginning in the 1860s and was very active in the interwar years., In the years immediately following the Second World War the community was forced to be less active, but it soon renewed its activity in 1958, when the state gave allowance to the Polish Cultural Society of Joseph Bem in Hungary. After the fall of communism, over the course of the last twenty years, the number of Polish organizations has increased to almost eighty.The LXXVII Resolution of Hungarian Parliament of 1993 ("on the rights of national and ethnic minorities") has been the main contributing factor to this renewal. It gave the Poles freedom to cultivate their culture and traditions not only in Budapest, but also on the territory of Hungary as a whole.Currently, the Hungarian Polish community is estimated to include about 10-12,000 people.It can be considered a reason to be proud of, that the traditional friendship between Poland and Hungary, based originally on dynastic relations, and then on cultural, political, and economic ties, remains stable even today.StreszczenieHistoria przyjaźni narodów polskiego i węgierskiego, trwająca przeszło tysiąc lat jest unikatowa i niepowtarzalna w dziejach narodów i państw.Można mówić o tak długiej historii tylko i wyłącznie dzięki wzajemnemu szacunkowi i przyjaźni tych obu narodów.Niniejsza praca licencjacka koncentruje się na zagadnieniu pielęgnowania polskiej kultury na Węgrzech.Moim celem jest przede wszystkim przedstawienie obecności Polaków na terenie Węgier, od początków, tj. od końca X wieku, aż po czasy współczesne.W pierwszym rozdziale wyjaśniam i opisuję pojęcia, którymi się posługuję w swojej pracy jak na przykład: kultura, tożsamość kulturowa, naród, mniejszość i diaspora , czyli potocznie Polonia.W drugim rozdziale zajmuję się dziejami zbiorowości polskiej na terenie Węgier.Kładę tu nacisk na różne kwestie dotyczące Polonii węgierskiej m.in. przedstawiam przyczyny i okoliczności przybycia ludności polskiej na te tereny oraz działalność tej grupy pielęgnującą tradycje narodowe w różnych okresach historii i podczas zmian ustrojowych.W trzecim, a zarazem w ostatnim rozdziale, wybrałam do analizy najważniejsze organizacje i instytucje polonijne, piszę o ich powstaniu i działalności kulturalnej.Polacy na Węgrzech stworzyli wiele wartości kulturowych i tworzą je nadal. Nie mogę zataić faktu, że pochodzę z rodziny polsko-wegierskiej, co determinuje moje zainteresowanie tą tematyką. Jest ona obecna w moim życiu na co dzień.Historia Polaków na węgierskiej ziemi jest prawie tak długa, jak historia tego kraju. Różne były przyczyny emigracji z Polski i różne okresy jej występowania w mniejszym lub większym nasileniu. Należą do nich stosunki polityczne, migracje ludności, skutki powstań narodowych i wojen światowych. Polacy kiedy przybywali na ziemię węgierską w czasie powstań lub wojen światowych doświadczyli od narodu węgierskiego wielką przyjaźń i okazanie pomocy w potrzebie.W czasie II wojny światowej np. Węgry były jedynym krajem, w którym Polacy mogli pobierać nauki na każdym szczeblu edukacji. Zarówno dzieci mogły uczęszczać do szkół podstawowych, młodzież do gimnazjów i liceów, młodzież kończąca liceum mogła zdecydować się na studia akademickie.Polonia, zakładająca swoje pierwsze organizacje od lat szescdziesiątych XIX stulecie począwszy i bardzo aktywna w okresie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego, a zniewolona w latach po II wojnie światowej, mogła wznowić działaność od 1958 roku począwszy, kiedy wyrażona została państwowa zgoda na zaistnienie Polskiego Stowarzyszenia Kulturalnego im. Józefa Bema na Węgrzech. Po zmianie ustroju, w okresie ostatniego dwudziestolecia ilość oragniazcji polonijnych wzrosła do prawie osiemdziesięciu.Do wzrostu ilościowego przyczyniła się w zasadniczej mierze Ustawa LXXVII Parlamentu Węgierskiego z 1993 roku „o prawach mniejszości narodowych i etniczynch”. Dała ona Polakom wolną rękę w pielęgnowaniu własnej kultury, tradycji nie tylko w Budapeszcie, ale na terenie całych Węgier.Węgierska Polonia liczy obecnie ok10-12 tysięcy osób w skali całego kraju.Jest powodem do dumy fakt, że tradycyjna przyjaźń między narodem polskim i węgierskim oparta najpierw na kontaktach dynastycznych, a potem także kulturalnych, politycznych i gospodarczych pozostaje wciąż żywa i trwała
