The work concentrates on the musical aesthetics of Johann Wolfgang Goethe, his connections with music and the popularity of his poems among the composers of songs (especially in the Romantic period). The aim of these considerations is to show the differences between the poet’s aesthetics and the 19th-century music compositions to his works. My essay focuses on the songs to Kennst du das Land from Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre. The confrontation of seven versions of Mignon’s ballad shows the specific tradition of interpretation, inaugurated by Ludwig van Beethoven. This tradition is different from Goethe’s views.
