Unilateralism and multilateralizm in the post-cold war foreign policy of the United States and the European Union.

Bipolar model of international relations, in which the most important actors were the United States and the Soviet Union, collapsed at the end of the cold war. It has caused many significant changes in the international scene. One of them was the acceleration of integration process in Europe. As a result, the European Union is today one of the most important actors on the international scene next to United States. The European Union and the United States realize foreign policy in a different, characteristic for them, way. The Union is an organization of assumptions acting multilaterally. United States, although in its history also acted multilaterally, prefer unilateralism, which could be seen in both the doctrinal sphere and actual involvement in international conflicts.Transatlantic relations still occupy an important place in international relations and foreign policies of both actors. United States had its own substantial contribution to the creation of European structures, which aim initially was to ensure stability on the European continent. Today, activity of the Union is no longer limited only to the territory of Europe, and its some attributes allow it to aspire to the role of equal partner to the USA.The question of whether the United States needs Europe just as Europe needs the U.S. constantly manifests itself in scientific discourse and public debate. Most agree that a model of international relations, in which the United States occupied a leading position went to the past. The Union, however, due to its characteristic mode of action on the international scene, seems to be the best partner for them.Bipolarny model stosunków międzynarodowych, w którym najważniejszymi aktorami były Stany Zjednoczone i Związek Radziecki, uległ rozpadowi wraz z końcem zimnej wojny. Spowodowało to wiele istotnych zmian na scenie międzynarodowej. Jedną z nich było przyspieszenie procesów integracyjnych w Europie. W wyniku tego, Unia Europejska jest dziś jednym z najbardziej liczących się aktorów na scenie międzynarodowej, obok miedzy innymi Stanów Zjednoczonych. Unia Europejska i Stany Zjednoczone, realizują politykę zagraniczną w odmienny, charakterystyczny dla siebie sposób. Unia jest organizacją działającą z założenia multilateralnie. Stany Zjednoczone, choć w swej historii działały także wielostronnie, preferują unilateralizm, co widać było zarówno w sferze doktrynalnej, jak i rzeczywistym zaangażowaniu w konflikty międzynarodowe.Relacje transatlantyckie wciąż zajmują ważne miejsce w stosunkach międzynarodowych i politykach zagranicznych obu aktorów. Stany Zjednoczone miały swój niebagatelny wkład w powstanie struktur europejskich, których celem początkowo miało być zapewnienie stabilizacji na kontynencie europejskim. Dzisiaj, działalność Unii nie ogranicza się już tylko do terytorium Europy, a jej niektóre atrybuty pozwalają jej aspirować do roli równorzędnego partnera USA.Kwestia tego, czy Stany Zjednoczone potrzebują Europy tak samo, jak Europa Stanów nieustannie przejawia się w dyskursie naukowym i debacie publicznej.
