The state of mental health and its relation with the sense of coherence, and the social support of Alzheimer patients’ caregivers.

The review of literature clearly indicates that caring for a person suffering from Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most difficult forms of family care. Undertaking the role of a caregiver involves many negative consequences in the extent of mental and physical health, as well as the financial and social situation of not only the caregiver, but his whole family. The primary aim of this study was the evaluation of the level of non-psychotic mental disorders among the caregivers of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, it was attempted to demonstrate that the resources in the form of the sense of coherence, and social support have a significant influence on the state of mental health of the caregivers. The research was conducted on 56 caregivers of people suffering from AD. The evaluation of the state of mental health of the study group was compared with the health state of chronic patients’ (not demential) caregivers due to the lack of reference norms. The Goldberg General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) was used for the evaluation of the state of mental health, while the sense of coherence and social support was determined with the Antonovsky’s Sense of Coherence Scale (SCO-29), and the Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS). The obtained results indicate that the caregivers of people suffering from AD display significantly more non-psychotic mental disorders in the extent of somatic symptoms, anxiety and sleeplessness, and everyday functioning, when compared with chronic patients’ caregivers. A negative correlation between the level of the sense of coherence and psychic burden from care was also demonstrated. The hypothesis of the influence of social support on the state of mental health of the caregivers was partially confirmed.Przegląd literatury wskazuje jednoznacznie, iż opieka nad osobą cierpiącą na chorobę Alzheimera stanowi jedną z najtrudniejszych form opieki rodzinnej. Podjęcie roli opiekuna wiąże się z licznymi negatywnymi konsekwencjami w zakresie zdrowia psychicznego, fizycznego, a także sytuacji społecznej i finansowej nie tylko samego opiekuna, ale także całej jego rodziny.Podstawowym celem niniejszej pracy była ocena poziomu natężenia niepsychotycznych zaburzeń psychicznych wśród opiekunów osób cierpiących na chorobą Alzheimera. Ponadto podjęto próbę wykazania, iż zasoby w postaci silnego poczucia koherencji, oraz wsparcia społecznego w sposób istotny wpływają na stan zdrowia psychicznego opiekunów.Badanie przeprowadzono wśród 56 opiekunów osób chorych na AD. Ze względu na brak norm referencyjnych, ocenę stanu zdrowia psychicznego grupy badawczej porównano z stanem zdrowia opiekunów osób przewlekłe chorych, ale nieotepiennych. Do oceny stanu zdrowia psychicznego użyto Kwestionariusza Ogólnego Stanu Zdrowia Goldberga (GHQ-28), natomiast poziom poczucia koherencji i wsparcie społeczne mierzono za pomocą Kwestionariusza Orientacji Życiowej Antonovsky'ego (SCO-29), oraz Berlińskich Skal Wsparcia Społecznego (BSSS).Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, iż opiekunowie osób cierpiących na AD przejawiają istotnie więcej niepsychotycznych zaburzeń psychicznych w zakresie objawów somatycznych, lęku i bezsenności, oraz codziennego funkcjonowania, w porównaniu do opiekunów osób chorych nieotepiennych. Wykazano również ujemną korelację pomiędzy poziomem poczucia koherencji a psychicznym obciążeniem opieką.
