Nursing and the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The history of nursing begins with the beginning of the humanity. Along with the development of civilization and culture, men have explored their knowledge of medical science to improve their quality of life. The lot of the development of care improvement have done the clergy and religious congregations. The origins of the first institutions like hospitals have its roots in a medieval monastic activity. Nuns and friars were engaged for centuries in taking care of the sick.At the time of partitions, in Galicia, which was struggling with poverty, mainly the nuns have taken care for the sick. Fulfilling the assumptions of the Christian charity, they have rushed to help the poorest. The nuns gathered by St. Fr. Joseph Sebastian Pelczar, spiritual guide and the founder of the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, have took on the task, which had not been done by any congregation so far. Wishing to change the fate of the poor inhabitants of Krakow, they have served the ministry of nursing in the environment of the patient's home. Expanding their knowledge of caring for the sick, they have participated in many courses, lectures and practical classes organized by doctors; later, they finished nursing schools. They have brought help to the suffering, staying all day and night by the bed of the sick.Dzieje pielęgniarstwa zaczynają się z początkiem ludzkości. Wraz z rozwojem cywilizacji i nauki człowiek zgłębiał swoją wiedzę z zakresu medycyny by poprawić jakość życia. Duży udział w rozwoju sprawowania opieki nad chorym miało duchowieństwo i zgromadzenia zakonne. Powstanie pierwszych instytucji na wzór szpitali przypisuje się średniowiecznej działalności klasztornej. Siostry i bracia zakonni przez wieki zajmowali się pielęgnowaniem chorych.W czasie zaborów, w borykającej się z biedą Galicji, opiekę nad chorymi sprawowały głównie siostry zakonne. Realizując założenia chrześcijańskiej miłości względem bliźniego spieszyły z pomocą najuboższym. Siostry skupione przy ks. Józefie Sebastianie Pelczarze, duchowym przewodniku i założycielu Zgromadzenia Służebnic Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego podjęły się zadania, którego do tej pory nie wykonywało żadne zgromadzenie. Pragnąc zmienić los ubogich mieszkańców Krakowa, pełniły posługę pielęgniarską w środowisku domowym chorego. Rozwijając swoją wiedzę z zakresu sprawowania opieki nad chorym, uczestniczyły w kursach, wykładach i zajęciach praktycznych organizowanych przez lekarzy, później kończyły szkoły pielęgniarskie.
