The poverty in Middle Ages: in between of choice and necessity. A matter of indigence against economic position of France and Italy in XIII-XV century.

This research shows a background of the poor in France and Italy during late Middle Ages. Paupers are divided into two main categories: out of necessity and by choice. Master’s thesis describes feudal system, origin of the cities and other important events, which directly affected society’s pauperization. Separately, this paper takes up a subject related to impoverishment of people living in the countries as well as in the cities. Particular categories of the paupers, from the ‘wealthiest’ to the poorest, are included. Present research also rises an issue of charity institutions and describes the attitude of the rest of society towards the poor. Furthermore, poverty problem in context of asceticism is raised. It shows motives and ideology of eremites, also describing the poverty of monks in the traditional and mendicant orders. Finally, this research tries to answer the following question: what were the reasons for people joining that world of extreme poverty willingly.Praca przedstawia środowisko ludzi ubogich we Francji i Italii w późnym średniowieczu. Dzieli nędzarzy na dwie główne kategorie: tych z konieczności oraz wyboru. Opisuje system feudalny, powstanie miast oraz inne ważne wydarzenia, które miały bezpośredni wpływ na pauperyzację społeczeństwa. Osobno porusza kwestie związane z ubożeniem ludzi mieszkających na wsiach i w miastach. Zawiera poszczególne kategorie nędzarzy, ujęte od najlepiej sytuowanych do najbardziej cierpiących w ubóstwie. Przedstawia również instytucje dobroczynne oraz opisuje stosunek reszty społeczeństwa do ubogich. Ponad to praca porusza motyw ubóstwa w kontekście ascezy. Przedstawia pobudki oraz ideologię eremitów, opisuje ubóstwo zakonników w zakonach tradycyjnych i żebraczych. W końcu zawiera odpowiedź na pytanie dlaczego w świecie permanentnej nędzy byli ludzie, którzy do tego środowiska dobrowolnie się przyłączali
