α-Lipoic acid is commonly known as a substance with powerful antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activity of its products of biodegradation - 2,4-dihydrotiobutanoic acid and 2,4-bismetylotiobutanoic acid - in the cardiovascular system. The effect of test compounds on lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro. It was examined the effect on blood pressure in normotensive rats after intraperitoneal administration and the effect on cardiac arrhythmias caused by occlusion and reperfusion the left coronary artery.
