The thesis entitled Family disintegration in the selected plays by Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams attempts to discuss the subject of an American family crisis, presents the reader with its literary representation, exemplified by the selected plays written by Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams, recognized American playwrights of the 20th century.Chapter I, focusing on the sociological and historical issues, provides the reader with the social background to the major past events, influencing, shaping the situation of the main characters. Individual subsections deal with the changing model of an American family, facing major 20th century events: economic crisis of the 1930s, the New Deal recovery programs and reforms, World War II, an economic boom and prosperity period of the 1950s. The author focuses on the strong differences between the official model of an American family in the subsequent decades and the hard reality of the thirties, forties and fifties, by raising the issues of family disintegration, weakening emotional bonds, collapse of the traditional American values and national myths.The next two chapters are entirely devoted to the works of Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. They deal with the issues raised by the leading American playwrights: family disintegration, lack of harmony and communication between individual members, growing generation gaps, responsibility towards the family and society. The plays, written in the 1940s – 1950s: Death of a Salesman, All My Sons, The Glass Menagerie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof present the stories of four different families, facing troubles, dilemmas and challenges of the new, postwar society. Characters are forced to deal with the emotional, domestic and economic crisis. They seem isolated from the reality, unable to cope with the challenges, problems and difficulties of their own lives. Family members, engaged in conflicts and complicated interpersonal relationships, face dilemmas, reveal their longings and weaknesses, struggle to retain respect of other people. Literary analysis of the selected works introduces the reader with the information concerning the complex family relations, position of women, values and myths fundamental to the image of the American nation, the issue of one’s responsibility towards the family and society, feelings of loneliness, isolation and disappointment.The aim of the paper is to outline major problems, social phenomena, past transformations and challenges, reflected in the works of American drama. The assumption is not to form unquestionable, explicit conclusions and generalizations, but to encourage readers to further consideration, draw their attention to the situation of a “typical” family which, regardless of historical period, social background, recommended model and structure, has always been forced to deal with the universal doubts, problems and difficulties.Przedmiotem pracy zatytułowanej Rozpad rodziny amerykańskiej w wybranych sztukach Arthura Millera i Tennessee Williamsa jest kryzys rodziny amerykańskiej, literackie przedstawienie rozpadającej się struktury, na przykładzie wybranych dramatów. Rozdział I, mający charakter socjologiczno – historyczny, ukazuje tło obyczajowe i społeczne wydarzeń będących udziałem bohaterów omawianych dramatów. Kolejne podrozdziały prezentują zmieniający się model rodziny amerykańskiej, stojącej w obliczu kryzysu gospodarczego lat 30., reform społeczno – gospodarczych przeprowadzonych w ramach programu New Deal, wydarzeń II wojny światowej. Poruszając temat dezintegracji rodziny, osłabienia więzi emocjonalnych, upadku mitów i wartości stojących u podstaw amerykańskiego społeczeństwa, autorka zwraca uwagę na rozbieżności pomiędzy oficjalnym modelem rodziny w poszczególnych dekadach, a sytuacją rzeczywistą, będącą udziałem kobiet i mężczyzn żyjących w latach 30., 40., 50. XX w., stojących w obliczu wydarzeń takich jak: wielka depresja, II wojna światowa, boom gospodarczy, okres prosperity lat 50. Kolejne rozdziały, poświęcone twórczości Arthura Millera i Tennessee Williamsa, przedstawiają zagadnienia poruszane w utworach amerykańskich dramatopisarzy: rozpad rodziny, brak harmonii, osłabienie więzi międzypokoleniowych, odpowiedzialność względem rodziny i społeczeństwa. Tworzone w latach 40. – 50. XX w. dramaty: Śmierć komiwojażera, Wszyscy moi synowie, Szklana menażeria oraz Kotka na gorącym blaszanym dachu, opisują historie poszczególnych rodzin, poruszają temat trudności, wyzwań, będących udziałem powojennego społeczeństwa amerykańskiego. Bohaterowie dramatów wydają się być oderwani od otaczającego ich świata, nie radzą sobie z własnym życiem, przeżywają kryzys. Analiza treści wybranych utworów dostarcza informacji odnośnie skomplikowanych relacji łączących poszczególnych członków rodzin, pozycji kobiet, wartości stojących u podstaw funkcjonowania amerykańskiego społeczeństwa, kwestii odpowiedzialności jednostki względem rodziny i społeczeństwa, poczucia osamotnienia, rozczarowania, izolacji, towarzyszących poszczególnym bohaterom.Prezentowana praca, skupiająca się przede wszystkim na analizie literackiej, ma na celu zarysowanie najważniejszych problemów, wskazanie zjawisk społecznych, przemian historycznych i obyczajowych, znajdujących swoje odbicie w dziełach literackich. Jej celem nie jest sprecyzowanie niepodważalnych, jednoznacznych wniosków i uogólnień, lecz zachęcenie do refleksji, zwrócenie uwagi na sytuację rodziny, która bez względu na okres historyczny, sytuację zewnętrzną, propagowany model i strukturę, od zawsze zmaga się z uniwersalnymi wątpliwościami, problemami, trudnościami
