Mitochondria play a vital role during oogenesis and preimplantation embryogenesis in mammals. They are responsible for such activities like ATP synthesis, calcium homeostasis, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or apoptosis. They are the most abundant organelles in mammalian oocyte and early embryo, and their number can be used as the indicator of the developmental competence. Because mitochondria does not replicate before the implantation of the embryo, their functional and numerical disorders may lead to the impaired embryogenesis or embryo arrest.
