Astrocytes are a group of cells of great abundance in the brain. The perform numerous functions enabling the brain to maintain homeostasis, they take part in ignal transmission and developmental and trophic processes. Astrocytes have a unique morphology – they posses many processes which ensheath synapses, taking part in and modulating their function. They also express a large number of receptors, for example ones for glucocorticoids. These steroids have a genomic effect on cells and our project aimed at rsearching these in relation to three genes encoding cytoskeletal proteins (GFAP, ezrin, vimentin).
