The place and role of a woman in Polish society in Enlightenment on the basis of female diaries.

While considering the etymology of a word "woman" it is quite obvious that this word is a relatively fresh linguistic creation. Up to the 14th century it was common to describe a female adult by words:'żena' and ' zona' which later on was restricted only to a married woman. The word ' żona' with its original meaningwas replaced by a word 'niewiasta'( originally meaning a foreign female who was working as a household servant). 'Podwika' and 'białogłowa' were also the terms applied to describe a woman.The word 'kobieta' itself appeared in the 17th century when it was popularised by satiric works in literature, which, however, stressed its insulting nature ( the word derives from 'kobu'-pigsty, 'kobi'-fortell and 'koby'-female horse).It was used up to the 18th century, gradually losing its insulting meaning. Simultaneously with the change of meaning of the words, the role of woman has undergone a change. Following the Aristotle's philosophy, Christian theology and Absolutists doctrines, it was the man who had the omnipotent power as a father and husband. It does not mean that the issue of women and their roles was not discussed- their equality with men, their intellectual value and ambition as well as their place in the society were issues to have been generating a great deal of a heated debate. This arguments varied in terms of character and the scale. The most essential transformations concerning the position of a woman i Poland were more noticeable in the 17th and 18th century, when the changes influenced not only the society's mentality, but also the mentality of women themselves. The idea that women were stupid creatures, deprived of free will, completely subordinate to men is misleading. There are many sources- especially diaries- depicting rich personalities of women, their open-mindedness and the sobriety of judgement. Following the title of the project the role and position of women will be analysed on the basis of the female diaries coming from that period.The chronological scale of this topic embraces years: 1740-1830. Diaries are a perfect historical source in which you can find answers for the questions concerning the problem of women's position in the society of that times. Preserved memoriesconcern many female issues.The special value have those diaries which authors described in detail their everyday life, family relations, their children and themselves. The project consists of 4 chapters.The first chapter presents the general characteristics of the epoch: the chronological scale, the description of the most important streams in the science and life,paying a particular attention to the philosophy concerning the position of a woman.After that, there is a description of transformations in the structure of the Polish society. Additionally, thereare some short pieces of information about the 18th-century diary-keeping. The subject of the second chapter is the political and patriotic activity of a women as a foreground for the important historical events. The issues of politics are one of the major topics in the diaries, which can be an evidence that women were also interested in the politics and the issues of the country. The third chapter describesthe issue of the education and up-bringing of women. While analysing this issue a lot of attention was paid to the outline ofthe methodology and contents of the household education, paying attention to the role of mother. The analysis also embraced the education outside the place of living, namely in boarding schools at monasteries., the ideas of the thinkers and the activity of KEN. The last chapter describes the role of women in a family: the entire characteristics of how women were prepared to become the housewives, their obligations etc.This project does not embrace all the fields of this multidimensional topic, namely the position of woman in enlightenment. Undoubtedly, this topic requires a further thorough research.Zastanawiając się nad etymologią słowa „kobieta” nie trudno jest dostrzec, że słowo to jest stosunkowo późnym tworem językowym. Jeszcze do XIV w. na określenie płci pięknej używano słów „żena” lub „żona”, później dopiero pojęcie to uległo zwężeniu, oznaczając tylko mężatkę. Na miejscu wyrazu „żona” pojawiło się słowo „niewiasta” pierwotnie oznaczające obcą przybyszkę podległą członkom rodziny. „Podwika” oraz „białogłowa” to również wyrazy oznaczające kobietę. Słowo „kobieta” pojawiło się dopiero w XVII w. i wprowadziły je do literatury satyry, zaznaczając, iż jest to wyraz obelżywy, wywodzący się od słów „kobu”- chlewa, „kobi”- wróżyć, „koby”- kobyły. Dopiero w XVIII w. zaprzestano uważać to określenie za obelżywe. Tak samo jak zmieniało się nazewnictwo, zmianom ulegała tez sama pozycja kobiety. W myśl filozofii Arystotelesa, teologii chrześcijańskiej i doktryn absolutystycznych wszechwładnie panował mężczyzna w aureoli władzy męża i ojca. Nie oznacza to jednak, że nie toczono dyskusji o sprawy kobiet- o ich równość lub niższość wobec mężczyzn, o intelekt i aspiracje oraz ich miejsce w społeczeństwie. Spory przybierały różny charakter i zakres. Najistotniejsze przeobrażenia dotyczące pozycji kobiety w Polsce uwidoczniły się w XVII w. i XVIII w., gdzie najważniejsze przeobrażenia dokonały się w mentalności społeczeństwa a zwłaszcza samych kobiet. Mylący jest pogląd, że kobiety były bezwolnymi istotami, poddanymi woli mężczyzn. Istniejące źródła- zwłaszcza pamiętniki- ukazują bogatą osobowość kobiet, otwartość umysłu i trzeźwość osądów. Zgodnie z tytułem pracy, analizie zostanie poddana pozycja i rola kobiety, jaką zajmowała w osiemnastowiecznym społeczeństwie w oparciu o pamiętniki kobiece tego okresu. Zasadniczym zakresem chronologicznym podejmowanego zagadnienia są lata 1740-1830. Pamiętniki to doskonałe źródło historyczne w którym można znaleźć odpowiedź na pytanie o rolę kobiety w ówczesnym społeczeństwie. Zachowane wspomnienia dotyczącą wielu informacji o kobietach. Szczególną wartość maja te pamiętniki, gdzie autorki dużo miejsca poświęciły swemu życiu codziennemu, stosunkom rodzinnym, swoim dzieciom i sobie samym. Praca składa się z 4 rozdziałów. Rozdział pierwszy stanowi ogólną charakterystykę epoki: poruszono problematykę ram chronologicznych, opisano najważniejsze prądy umysłowe tego okresu, zwrócono szczególnie uwagę na poglądy filozoficzne dotyczące miejsca kobiety w społeczeństwie. Następnie opisano przemiany, jakie dokonały się w strukturze społeczeństwa polskiego. Dodatkowo zawarto krótkie wiadomości na temat osiemnastowiecznego pamiętnikarstwa. Przedmiotem rozważań w kolejnym rozdziale jest polityczna i patriotyczna aktywność kobiet na tle ówczesnych znaczących wydarzeń. Sprawy polityki zajmują wiele miejsca w pamiętnikach kobiecych, co świadczyć może o dużym zainteresowaniu kobiet sprawami państwa.Rozdział trzeci poświęcono zagadnieniu edukacji i wychowania kobiet. Rozpatrując to zagadnienie zwrócono uwagę na zarys metod i treści domowej edukacji, uwzględniając w tym rolę matki. Analizie poddane zostało kształcenie kobiet poza środowiskiem domowym, czyli na prywatnej pensji i w szkole przyklasztornej. Zwrócono także uwagę na poglądy ówczesnych publicystów na kształcenie kobiet oraz działalność Komisji Edukacji Narodowej w tym zakresie. Ostatni rozdział dotyczy roli kobiety w rodzinie. Zwrócono w nim uwagę, że kobieta od kolebki przygotowywana była do roli matki, żony i gospodyni.W rozdziale tym omówiono także pozycję kobiety jako matki, scharakteryzowano jej pozycję w rodzinie i obowiązki, jakie na niej ciążyły. Niniejsza praca nie wyczerpuje tematu, tak ciekawego i wielopłaszczyznowego, jakim jest pozycja kobiety w oświeceniu. Niewątpliwie temat ten wymaga dalszych, dogłębnych badań
