Obstructive sleep apnea - methods of diagnosis and treatment

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a very serious illness but still little known to both the society and among medical doctors. It is a cause of deterioration of the quality of life, as well as premature termination of it. The aim of the thesis is to elaborate on the illness, introduce its causes, its complications and the methods of treatment. Basing on the materials listed in the bibliography I introduced the most important information about OSA and its symptoms. I also showed what untreated OSA may lead to. It can result in more frequent cardiovascular incidents leading in turn to premature death. In my thesis I demonstrated the methods of diagnostics with special focus on polysomnography as the gold standard for diagnosis of OSA. In the thesis I have shown a few methods of curing OSA. At present the most effective one is the use of the CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machine. It is said to be the gold standard in curing OSA. I also tried to show the role of a nurse in solving the problems that the patients may have in diagnosing and curing OSA. For the end I listed some statistics developed on the basis of the polysomnography research in the Proszowice County Hospital.Obturacyjny bezdech senny (OBS) to choroba groźna, ale nadal mało znana wśród społeczeństwa jak i wśród lekarzy. Jest ona przyczyną zarówno pogorszenia jakości życia, a także często jego skrócenia. Celem tej pracy jest przedstawienie tej choroby, jej przyczyn i powikłań, również ukazanie sposobów leczenia. Na podstawienie bibliografii przedstawiłam najważniejsze informacje o OBS, o jego objawach, do czego może prowadzić nieleczony bezdech senny. Ma on wpływ na częstsze występowanie incydentów sercowo-naczyniowych co prowadzi do przedwczesnych zgonów. W pracy ukazałam sposoby diagnostyki, ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na polisomnografię, jako ,,złoty standard” w diagnozowaniu OBS. W pracy tej ukazałam kilka metod leczenia OBS. Aktualnie najskuteczniejszą z nich jest zastosowanie protezy powietrznej, czyli aparatu CEPAP. Jest on uważany za ,,złoty standard” w leczeniu OBS. Starałam się także ukazać rolę pielęgniarki w rozwiązywaniu problemów jakie najczęściej towarzyszą pacjentom w diagnozowaniu i leczeniu OBS. Na zakończenie przedstawiłam kilka danych statystycznych wykonanych na podstawie przeprowadzonego badania polisomnografii w szpitalu powiatowym w Proszowicach
