Sifiliz, etkeni Treponema pallidum isimli bir spiroket olan ve genellikle cinsel yolla bulaşan multisistemik bir hastalıktır. Hastalığın seyri boyunca, vücuttaki tüm organlar tutulabilir. Nörosifiliz, hastalığın merkezi sinir sistemi (MSS) tutulumu ile giden klinik bir formudur. Erken nörosifilizde başlıca meningeal ve vasküler yapılar tutulurken, beyin ve omurilik parankim tutulumu nörosifilizin geç dönemlerinde ortaya çıkar. Sifilitik menenjit, meningovaskülit ve parankimal nörosifiliz (genel parezi ve tabes dorsalis) gibi tablolarla karşımıza çıkabilir.
