International audienceThe meditation on time that St. Augustine develops in Book XI of his Confessions still holds the attention of philosophers and psychologists today. The present article intends to go through Book XI, highlighting the role that Augustine makes it play in his sensitivity to language and in particular to poetic fact. Indeed, he never ceases to illustrate his point with examples taken from poetry or song (two notions that are more or less synonymous for him). We propose here to go into detail about these examples and to relate them to other similar examples in Augustine's work.
