Ponderomotive laser self-focusing poses a threat to the success of the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) program: it locally enhances the laser intensity, which causes two detrimental effects: i) undermining the uniformity of the shock wave launched into the target, and ii) increasing the onset of laser-plasma instabilities.
