International audienceMuch of osteological analysis focuses on determining the sex of the individual being studied. Because sexual dimorphism of the os coxae is shared by all Homo sapiens, analysis of this bone produces convincing determinations of sex. Apart from its reliability, however, its structure is mainly composed of cancellous bone and is therefore fragile. Thus, as previous studies have shown, the different parts of the os coxae are not uniformly preserved for taphonomic reasons, but also as a consequence of their handling from the time of excavation to laboratory study.
