In 2000, the Security Council of the United Nations adopted the resolution 1325, implementing the agenda “Women, Peace and Security”, which constitutes a milestone in the full recognition of the importance to address sexual violence in armed conflict, and increase the participation of women in decision-making and peace processes, in order to address the roots of gender-based violence.The first part of this essay will be addressing in a detailed way the phenomenon of conflictrelated sexual violence and the legal provisions within international humanitarian law and international human rights law that address the issue, in order to protect women from sexual violence in conflict.
