La sorcière dans le romantisme anglais : déraison, surnature et marginalisation

The aim of this master’s dissertation is to observe and analyse not the practice of witchcraft itself, but the reception of such practice through the representation of witches in poetry. During the 18th century, beliefs and ideas in such matter remained thoroughly incompatible between the elite and the masses2, making it relevant to focus on the main points of contention. This study will neither dig into the witch trials craze nor their persecution, but on the effect of such events on popular imagination, and the decline of the beliefs it led to, during the age of reason and the rise of rationalist critique. When, why, and how a concept such as that of the witch came to evolve from a popular belief to a myth, and therefore a resource widely used in poetry and arts in gene ?Ce mémoire a pour but d’observer, non pas la pratique de la sorcellerie, mais les réactions face ce phénomène traduit par la représentation de ce personnage dans la poésie. Au XVIIIe siècle les croyances venant d’en haut étaient irrévocablement opposées à celles d’en bas, il devient alors intéressant de se pencher sur les points de divergences entre la vision de l’élite et celle du peuple. Cette étude ne portera pas tant sur la persécution des sorcières, ni sur les procès pour sorcellerie, mais plus sur les conséquences de ces événements sur l’imaginaire populaire et sur le déclin de cette croyance dû à l’essor de la pensée critique rationaliste.
