Ph.D.Background: Some sleep disturbances, like short sleep and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), have been reported to be highly associated with insulin resistance and incident diabetes in the general population. Both impaired sleep quantity and sleep quality may have an adverse effect on glucose homeostasis, which is possibly through the elevation of inflammation biomarkers, activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the dysregulation of leptin and ghrelin.
