Ph.D.Structural heart diseases (SHD) refer to a variety of non-coronary structural diseases of the cardiovascular system including valvular heart diseases, congenital heart diseases, and pathologies of the great vessels. In the past 5 years, there has been a significant increase in the types of percutaneous catheter-based devices and interventions developed for various SHD. A wide clinical adoption of these percutaneous procedures, however, depends heavily on outcome of these procedures relative to conventional treatment such as open surgery.
