The cold target recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) technique has settled in recent years as a very valuable tool to perform kinematically complete experiments. As a result, several laboratories worldwide have implemented COLTRIMS devices during the last decade. In this work, we provide a survey over the fundamental concepts of this technique and focus on how it allows one to perform state-selective electron capture studies. Results for the reaction 3He2+ +He explored at the Atomic Collisions Laboratory in Bariloche are shown and discussed.
