Neutral gas density data (molecular nitrogen N2 and atomic oxygen O) between 310 and 330 km of altitude obtained by the Dynamic Explorer 2 satellite and ground-based foF2 data obtained with ionosondes were used to examine the response of the thermosphere-ionosphere system to an intense geomagnetic storm occurred on September 5, 1982. The results represent a comparison of simultaneous measurements of storm disturbances in gas composition and peak electron density. Increases of N2 concentration and concurrent decreases of O concentration are observed during the geomagnetic storm, being the N2 variation greater than O variation.
