Laser-based desorption and/or ionization methods play an important role in the field of the analysis of low molecular-weight compounds (LMWCs) because they allow direct analysis with high-throughput capabilities. In the recent years there were several new improvements in ionization methods with the emergence of novel atmospheric ion sources such as laser ablation electrospray ionization or laser diode thermal desorption and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization and in sample preparation methods with the development of new matrix compounds for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI). Also, the combination of ion mobility separation with laser-based ionization methods starts to gain popularity with access to commercial systems....
