For the crossroad with very different amounts of traffic flow in four different directions, we proposed an image processing based algorithm for traffic lights control system. The system dynamically adjusts the time of the traffic lights in four directions to reduce the waiting time. Four cameras equipped above the road in four directions are used to obtain input images. The backgrounds and the moving objects are also obtained and extracted. In the proposed system, two control modes are introduced: moving object mode and vehicle mode.
